Microsoft introduces new Windows backup tool for businesses
Microsoft has introduced Windows Backup for Organizations, a new backup tool for enterprises that simplifies backups and makes the transition to Windows 11 easier.
First announced at Microsoft Ignite in November 2024, this tool is now in limited public preview and will help back up and restore a user's Windows settings after resetting or reimaging their device.
"You can back up your organization's Windows 10 or Windows 11 settings and restore them on a Microsoft Entra joined device. This capability helps reduce migration overhead, minimize user disruption, and strengthen device resilience against incidents," Microsoft said.
"Whether you're planning a large-scale upgrade or simply looking to enhance your organization's device continuity strategy, this capability helps reduce migration overhead, minimize user disruption, and strengthen device resilience against incidents."
Windows Backup for Organizations is available for Microsoft Entra joined Windows 10 or Windows 11 systems.
Organizations that sign up for this public preview using this form also need an active Microsoft Intune test tenant and Microsoft Intune service administrator permissions to take full advantage of this feature.
"Try out Windows Backup for Organizations during the limited public preview," the company urged customers on Tuesday.
"This is just the beginning. As we continue to evolve this experience, more enhancements are on the horizon—ensuring your organization is always ready for what's next."
Those who can't upgrade to Windows 11 before Windows 10 reaches the end of service on October 14, 2025, are advised to enroll Windows 10 endpoints in the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program to continue receiving security updates.
In December, Microsoft also announced that Windows 10 home users will also be able to get an extra year of security updates through the company's ESU program if they're willing to pay $30 to delay the Windows 11 switch.
This week, Microsoft also announced a new update orchestration platform built on the Windows Update stack that aims to unify the updating system for all apps, drivers, and system components on Windows systems.
